What Isn't There Is Almost There

Wednesday, Jul 11 2012

It’s roughly a week to go before the premiere of Ang Nawawala (What Isn’t There), director Marie Jamora’s entry to this year’s Cinemalaya Festival, and the director admits that she and her crew are “literally days away from finishing the film.” “I really just want to finish it,” she tells this writer after the official press conference held for Ang Nawawala last July 10. “I’m really, really happy and excited. People tell me, ‘I’m excited for the film!’ and I always say, ‘Me too!’ because technically I haven’t seen it completely finished, and I can’t wait to see it (on the) big (screen).”

During the presscon, the media got their first look at the movie’s official trailer, while cast members Dominic Roco, Annicka Dolonius, Alchris Galura, Felix Roco, Jenny Jamora, Itchyworms’ Kelvin Yu, and Dawn Zulueta were present to entertain questions. “It’s a good turnout today because people that I didn’t think we would talk to were here, and then the usual suspects were also here,” says Jamora. “So it’s great to see overwhelming support for an indie film.”

The film also features music by a number of Marie’s favorite local music acts, including Sandwich, Itchyworms, Ebe Dancel, Pedicab, Ang Bandang Shirley, Tarsius, Outerhope, Hannah+Gabi, Flying Ipis, and The Strangeness, a number of whom actually performed live in key scenes in Ang Nawawala. But the director is confident that even non-enthusiasts of local music could appreciate her movie. “I do think there’s something for everybody,” she shares. “If you’re an Apo fan, maaaliw ka to see Buboy (Garovillo). If you’re a fan of independent cinema, you’ll have Mercedes (Cabral) there. And obviously, if you’re a fan of mainstream (movies), you’re going to love Dawn; she’s amazing in it. And then the twins (Dominic and Felix Roco) are great. There’s something for boys to look at; there’s something for girls to look at. And for me the best thing is if you love music, ito na ‘yon.”
